Description of the Path
Coming from the north, just past the Christian School the bypass
would rise upward cutting across five orchards and some grazing
land. A major intersection would be about a 500 metres east of the
Tekmar building on Silverstar Road. From there it would cross pasture
land and parallel Blackrock Road and St. Francis Road for a couple
kilometres until turning just past Pottery Road. The Eastern Byway
would then proceed down Mountainview Road where existing housing
would lost. It would run just north of the District 22 Schoolboard
buildings and 15th Ave until cross highway #6 where a viaduct would
pass over the industrial area that borders Kalamalka Road. It would
then cross just north of the Military camp and connect somewhere
near where the tourism info center and the Vernon Chamber of Commerce
are located.
Positives:
- Less elevation than the Western Bypass (6%). Remember, the highway
through town at Hospital Hill is 11%.
- Better access to Silverstar Ski Resort for north and the south
- Allows a bypass for both traffic coming from Kelowna and from
highway 6 (Lumby)
Negatives:
- Loss of some prime farm land.
- Loss of some existing housing.
- Passes near one school on St. Francis and Pottery road.
